Council cancels Hollister

The motorcycle rally which inspired ‘The Wild One’ film will be scrapped in 2006 due to a vote by the City Council.

The Hollister Rally take place on July 4, Independance day, and attracts more than 100,000 bikers from around the world. It began in 1947 with a motorcycle tour which led to near rioting and a starring role for Marlon Brando in a film inspired by the events.

It resumed in 1997, but has been voted against, three to two, as the city cannot continue paying for police patrols after the rally’s nonprofict organizing group said it could not fund the police in 2005, which cost the city $250,000.
