Speed record postponed

An attempt on the motorcycle speed record has been postponed for a second day, due to standing water on the track.

The Ack Attack bike will attempt to cross the dry bed of Lake Gairdner in Australia at a speed of around 330mph, to beat the 15-year-old record of 322mph set by a Harley-powered streamliner. It was due to take place on Monday, March 6, 2006, but the weather has interfered.

Rain on Sunday and Monday left standing water on the track, and while other bikes and cars have started running, the Top 1 Ack-Attack machine needs a much longer course, which still has puddles on it.

As it’s a hot summer week in Australia, conditions are expected to improve shortly.

The bike, features two heavily-tuned Suzuki Hayabusa engines with one huge turbo and a combined power of more than 900bhp. It also does away with radiators, using a 68-litre tank of iced water for cooling.

The team, led by Mike Akatiff, will be looking to break the record at the 15-mile long track on Tuesday, March 7, 2006, weather permitting.
