BT bans bikes

BT staff are banned from riding bikes, it emerged today, April 24, 2007

A spokesman for the telecoms giant told MCN: “We don’t allow motorcycling at all.”

“The ban applies during work hours. The spokesman said it was based on “safety factors”.

We reported last week that multinational company Johnson Controls Ltd had banned 5000 UK staff from riding in work hours.

Since then British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL) has also revealed restrictions. A spokesman said there was a mileage limit on staff journeys by motorcycle. He said: “Pretty much all the travel that we do between sites is over the limit because they are so dispersed.”

An AXA Insurance spokesman said he “wouldn’t be surprised” if thousands of UK firms had banned bikes in order to comply with a condition of AXA’s commercial liability policies that motorcycle use be kept to a minimum.

See tomorrow’s MCN (April 25, 2007) for a full investigation.
