Shropshire council erects sign to stop Sat-Nav blunder

Shropshire County Council has become the first in the UK to erect a road sign to warn drivers of a satellite navigation directions error.

The GPS-based navigation devices had been directing drivers down a small country lane in Hampton Loade, telling them there was a bridge to cross the River Severn, but the only way of crossing at that point is a small walk-on ferry which has been out of order for several months.

After hundreds of drivers were forced to turn around or reverse along the lane, a sign reading ‘Walk-on ferry only (Sat-Nav error)’ was placed at the start of the lane to prevent further motorists making the mistake.
