Westminster parking protest group formed

London motorcyclists are banding together to protest against the introduction of bike parking charges by Westminster City Council.

The Westminster Motorcycle Charging Direct Action group is planning a go-slow ride on August 22, which would set off from Hyde Park Corner at 9am.

Organiser Paul Amery has set up the group on social networking site Facebook. He says that the introduction of charges for parking is unreasonable, given that motorcyclists already pay fuel duty and road tax.

“With concerns over congestion and pollution, the council should be encouraging motorcyclists, not penalising them,” he told MCN.

Amery believes the City of London council, which neighbours Westminster, has been more pro-bike, by converting car bays to bike parking bays and keeping the parking free.

“They recognise the importance of their commuting and motorcycling client base. Westminster has gone for a money grab instead.”
