One in six motorcyclist deaths due to crash barriers

One in six motorcyclist deaths could result from hitting a crash barrier, according to research released today by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

Riders who collide with barriers are 15 times more likely to die than a car occupant would be, the research claims.

And barrier support posts cause injuries fives times more severe than those which occur in the average bike crash, according to ‘Barriers to change: designing safe roads for motorcyclists’.

IAM director Neil Greig said: “France has retro-fitted lower rails to prevent riders hitting support posts at the most vulnerable sites on its road network… If it can be done in France it must now be done in the UK.”
