Conservative MP Nicholas Soames has been summoned by a magistrate’s court to answer charges that he rode a quad motorcycle on a public road with a child sitting on the back, while towing a trailer with two other children on board, a spokeswoman in the MP’s parliamentary office has confirmed.

The spokeswoman said the MP has declined to comment on the matter, which came to light when pictures taken by anti-hunt campaigners were published in the Daily Mirror.

Soames, MP for mid-Sussex and the grandson of Sir Winston Churchill, is alleged to have ridden the quad with a child sat behind him, and two adults and two children in the trailer.

The case will be heard by Crawley Magistrates Court in the coming weeks.
