Pre-1916 Cannonball Run across America

1 of 5

An upcoming endurance run will see riders crossing the US on bikes built before the age of frozen food, radio broadcasting, traffic lights and penicillin.

The Cannonball Run will be contested on bikes made by early 20th century producers such as Flying Merkel, Excelsior, Henderson, Indian, Triumph, and Harley-Davidson (via one of their earliest models, the “Silent Grey Fellow”), the only requirement to entry is that the machine was built before 1916.

The run starts at 10am on Friday 10 September, when riders will leave the Atlantic shores of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Sixteen days later they aim to reach California and the finishing line of Santa Monica pier, on the shore of the Pacific Ocean.

Many of the bikes are museum exhibits or part of private collections, with the one-off 3,320 mile odyssey being a rare challenge for their ancient cylinders.

Amongst the enthusiasts, adventurers and racers taking part will be custom-cycle builder Shinya Kimura. His rare and rusty 1915 Indian twin is said to bear special significance as it is the same model that his grandfather used to ride in Japan.
