Speed camera staff face redundancy

Speed camera staff are facing redundancy due to Government road safety funding cuts.

Camera bosses in Devon and Cornwall are making half their staff redundant after budgets cuts of 26%.

The move means camera activity and fine numbers will reduce.

The Government has cut road safety grants to local authorities from £77million to £56million and withdrawn funding for fixed cameras.

Natalie Hatswell, of the Devon and Cornwall Safety Camera Partnership, told the BBC it would lead to “far more road traffic collisions and possibly serious injuries”.

But the Taxpayers’ Alliance claims the evidence cameras cut casualties isn’t there.

MCN revealed last month that Robert Gifford, director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety, had said regional camera authorities were “certain” to be axed in spending cuts aimed at plugging the budget deficit.
