Illegal Italian street-racing ring smashed

Italian police have closed down an illegal racing ring who routinely reached speeds in excess of 180mph on public roads.

Local Carabinieri in Lecce, near the heel of Italy’s boot, seized eight motorcycles and impounded another that was being made race ready. The 12 bikers involved have been charged with membership of a criminal organisation.

The races were apparently run as part of a clandestine betting ring, with up to 50 regular gamblers involved.

Undercover police infiltrated the group and filmed the most dangerous of their activities before making the arrests yesterday.
