Cycle group’s ‘misleading’ bus lanes claims

A cycle group has been accused of misleading the public with false claims about the safety of motorcycles in bus lanes.

A study found the cyclist collision rate fell where they shared bus lanes with us. But the London Cycling Campaign (LCC) reported the casualty rate rose.

Transport for London said a report found: ‘There was a fall in the cyclist collision rate across trial bus lanes.’

But LCC reported on its website: ‘The casualty rate for cyclists also increased significantly compared to other roads.’

It later changed its website report to concede: ‘Across the whole TLRN [Transport for London Road Network] in London, cycling casualties decreased, but this occurred at a lower rate in bus lanes with motorcycles in them.’

The group has fought to have motorcycles removed from London’s bus lanes since the trial began last year.

MAG’s Nich Brown said: “LCC must realise the statement was misleading if they’ve changed the wording.”

LCC declined to comment.
