Batman’s Batpod is to be sold in the UK later this month as part of an auction block of over 500 items worth a total of more than £1.5 million.

The bike, which featured in both The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, is expected to fetch between £60,000 and £80,000 and comes littered with bespoke parts.

The machine was devised by film director Christopher Nolan and production designer Nathan Crowley to feature solely in the film trilogy and will be sold with a Warner Bros. certificate of authenticity.

Crowley came up with the vision of the Batpod and it was then made real by special-effects supervisor Chris Corbould, who made six examples for use on The Dark Knight.

The custom-made chassis is fitted with 31-inch Hoosier racing tyres used in sprint car races in the United States. It was also fitted with a 750cc Honda engine and fibreglass body panels, with the exhaust concealed within the frame.

The bike measures 380cm by 120cm by 107cm and features prop cannon barrels and a dummy laser targeting unit. It is the first time the Batpod has been made available for public auction.

The Batpod is being sold in a non-functional state, with all of its fluids drained. The battery, fuel tank and throttle controls have also been removed.

The auction, which will take place on September 27 at London’s BFI IMAX cinema, will be broadcast via a livestream at www.propstore.com/liveauction

If you can’t stretch to buying it, the Batpod will go on display to the public alongside other props from the films in a free exhibition at the IMAX, which is near London’s Waterloo station, from September 14th until the 27th.
