The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride takes over the world!

Published: 25 September 2017

Motorcyclists around the world donned their Sunday best aboard their custom and retro machinery yesterday for the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, all to raise money and awareness of the dangers of prostate cancer and men’s mental health.

The ride saw more than 90,000 riders raise a combined total of nearly $4.5 million for the Movember Foundation in the process.

Dutch van Someren, owner of The Bike Shed and one of the organisers of the London ride said: “My favourite thing about this event is that it’s an opportunity for riders to look like really good, upstanding people and to reframe the way the people look at bikers and bike riders full stop. I mean the charity’s important too so that we can raise awareness and raise money but it’s also really important to biking as a whole.”

Now in its fifth year, the event has grown to become a truly global affair, with rides taking place all over the globe to support the cause. What started out as a ride in Sydney with 2,500 riders has grown to become an event that saw 95 countries taking part in more than 581 cities.

The UK alone hosted 43 rides and raised more than £500,000 for the Movember Foundation.

We took part in the London ride, where more than 1,000 suited and booted riders took to the streets of the capital, providing a fantastic sight as they rode by some of the countries’ most iconic landmarks.

“It’s been a great year, it’s nice to have God on our side with some good weather, we clearly did some deals with the Devil or something. We don’t care whoever’s on our side though as long as the weather’s good!” Dutch added.

“There were 1,000 people registered for the London ride this year but then we know that several hundred also turn up to London who registered for other rides and then there’s also another hundred people or so who just turn up on the day.

“Last year there were 1,400 riders and I’d guess that it was the same sort of figure for this year too.”

With a focus on retro motorcycles, it’s also become one of the best places to see some of the finest custom motorcycles being ridden anywhere with machines by all the world’s best builders coming together in all their glory.

What is the Movember foundation?

The Movember Foundation is the only charity that focusses on men’s health on a global scale.

The charity raises funds and awareness for a number of causes that affect men, including prostate cancer – which is the second most common cancer to be found in men - and testicular cancer. The charity also raises awareness for men’s mental health, with 510,000 men dying each year from suicide.

The aim of the foundation is to reduce the number of men dying from prostate and testicular cancer by half and also reduce the rate of male suicide by a quarter by 2030.

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride work closely with the Movember Foundation, not only helping to raise funding for the charity, but also by raising awareness of the problems faced by many men to help recognise and get problems diagnosed sooner when treatment is more effective.

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is a fantastic cause and not only brings bikers together but also paints a fantastic image of those who ride in general. Donations are still being accepted to help the Movember Foundation. For more information and to donate, visit the DGR website.
