Beefing up the beast: Touratech BMW R1250GS is ready for anything

German accessory specialists Touratech have focused their sights on the BMW R1250GS, turning the already capable machine into an off-road beast.

One of the most obvious and challenging parts of the project was replacing the standard 19in front wheel with a 21in Excel item to increase the GS’s off-road abilities.

The move involved Touratech drawing upon the expertise of suspension specialist Lars Würdemann.

Explaining the difficulties, Würdemann said: “We needed special adapters for the hub. That was a lot of work, but the enormous stiffness of the 21-inch front wheel proved that it was the right move.”

Front and rear suspension, meanwhile, has been beefed up with Touratech’s latest semi-active electronic Plug and Travel EVO range in the extra-long version to fit the GS.

An unexpected alteration to the factory original is the removal of the engine guard in favour of the company’s aluminium valve cover protectors which reduce the width of the GS, making it easier to tackle narrow gaps and gullies off-road.

The underside of the engine is protected by a hydroformed aluminium engine guard, and a Makrolon headlight protector ensures trails remain illuminated.

Other parts from the Touratech range round off the off-road prototype. Adjustable shift and foot brake levers allow the rider to adapt to the standing riding style, whilst folding levers for the front brake and clutch minimise the risk of breakage.
