Riders and other motorists are putting themselves at risk of being side-swiped by lorries because not enough of them are aware of HGV blind spots.

According to a survey by National Highways, only 36% of road users have the right knowledge, but a new campaign is aiming to help.

The survey also found that nearly 75% of people take extra care when overtaking an HGV, and 36% admitted feeling nervous when passing trucks.

In the campaign video, supported by the Road Haulage Association, Logistics UK and others, drivers are being urged to ‘know the zones’ where HGV drivers have limited visibility.

The four areas of limited visibility, located at the front, rear and each side of HGVs are more than large enough to hide even the biggest motorcycle and rider.

Recommendations include passing HGVs quickly and safely and, where possible, not to linger at the side of an HGV – one of its biggest blind spots.

Shannan Paterson, who’s known as the Queen of Trucks and has run Willenhall-based HGV Training Midlands school since she was just 21, is supporting the campaign.

“Driving a lorry is very different to driving a car. You can’t see anything behind you other than the trailer. Your only vision is in front of you and in the side mirrors. You don’t know if someone is immediately behind you, and they can’t see what is ahead of your HGV or if you are going to have to brake sharply for any reason.

“I fully support National Highways’ campaign and would encourage drivers to give HGVs space. For info visit www.nationalhighways.co.uk.
