Bike-mad trio rescue three-wheeler from a scrapyard for budget moped mountaineering challenge

A group of three biking-mad current and former soldiers are attempting to raise £3000 for good causes by completing the Three Peaks Challenge on a trio of cheap 50cc mopeds.

Good friends Nicholas Remer, Robert Mears, and Nathan Clarke will complete the circa 500-mile challenge in October over a week – riding first to Mount Snowdon in Wales, onto Scafell Pike, and finishing at Ben Nevis, climbing each of the mountains along the way.

“We set ourselves a budget of £700 each, with £500 to buy each bike,” Remer told MCN. “Whatever was left was then allowed to be spent on repairs.”

“Mine was probably in the worst state,” he continued. “It was found in a scrap yard in Norfolk, in a bunch of boxes.”

Nicholas will ride a three-wheeled BSA Ariel 3 from 1974, with Nathan riding a 1991 Jawa Babetta 210, and Robert using a 1981 Suzuki FZ50.

“Robert and I were out in Germany on a maintenance exercise for six months. One night, we had a few beers and thought we were about as good as it gets and thought why not set ourselves a bit of a challenge,” Remer added.

So far, the group have raised around £321 of their planned £3000 total – with the money raised set to be split across Cancer Research UK, Our Place Support, and Derby Museums. Donations can be made on the Give Wheel website today.

“We’ve all got our own reasons for picking them, but they are all charities that mean something for us,” Nicholas continued.
