New MoT photo checks set to go national in DVSA crackdown on dodgy tests and illegal mods

The DVSA are preparing to roll out new rules requiring MoT test centres across the UK to take photos of every vehicle they inspect, in a move aimed at stamping out fraudulent tests.

Following a successful six-week trial involving 62 garages and around 170 testers, more than 13,000 photos were uploaded to the MoT Testing System, with some garages reaching a 90% upload success rate by week one.

The agency says the scheme will expand, with the potential to make photographic evidence mandatory for all MoT tests soon.

As well as providing proof that the vehicle was present for inspection, the measure aims to make it impossible for testers to turn a blind eye to illegal mods such as small number plates.

The DVSA says the photos will help improve the quality and integrity of testing, providing an extra layer of transparency and accountability.

While not yet compulsory, the photo requirement is expected to become standard across the country in the near future.
