Motorcycle Industry Association joins European bodies in backing extra post-test tuition for riders

UK biking body, the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) are supporting calls from Europe encouraging riders to take additional post-test training.

“Motorcycling is under constant pressure to improve its road safety record, and it’s vital that we, as a sector, do all we can to address this,” MCIA Chief Executive, Tony Campbell said.

“While riders and the industry are stepping up, we will also be pressing the Government and road safety organisations to take more action.”

According to UK Government data, there were 29,540 killed or seriously injured road users in the year ending June 2024. Of this, 20% of the fatalities (319) were motorcyclists – despite making up around 1% of the traffic on British roads.

“We are urging the Department for Transport (DfT) to take a fresh look at how other road users are trained in hazard perception, with the goal of making roads safer for all vulnerable users – including motorcyclists,” Campbell continued.

The MCIA are supporting calls from the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM), and Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) – who launched a new ‘Learn – Ride – Enjoy – Repeat’ campaign on April 15, encouraging riders to invest in additional tuition to reduce accident rates.

“ACEM is confident that this campaign will make Europe’s roads safer for riders, contributing significantly towards EU safety targets and building an inclusive road safety culture, benefiting all,” Secretary General, Antonio Perlot said.

To help riders in Britain, the MCIA has set up the Elite Rider Hub which lists a wide range of on- and off-road courses in one online directory, plus suggestions for organisations like Biker Down and DocBike.
