Suzuki SV650 model history

1 of 6

The Suzuki SV650 and SV650S are easy to overlook, but the fact is that they're cult machines and they changed the face of biking.

Before the SV came along in 1999, there was very little choice for new riders looking for an easy-to-ride yet sporty and sexy first bike. The SV's sales success woke manufacturers up to the demand for desirable budget middleweights and created a class of bikes that includes models like the Kawasaki ER-6f and Yamaha XJ6 Diversion.

That's why we're celebrating 10 years of the Suzuki SV650 with a look back at how the bike has changed since its launch:

Suzuki SV650 (1999-2003)

Suzuki SV650/S (1999-2003)
The first curvy-style SV650 was launched in 1999, available in both naked and half-faired versions. With it the world realised that beginner bikes could be sporty and sexy as well as practical and easy to ride.

Suzuki SV650 (2003-2004)

For 2003 the SV650 got a complete styling overhaul. Suzuki ditched the friendly curves in favour of sharper sportier bodywork. The SV also got fuel injection instead of carbs, a new lighter die-cast frame, tasty new clocks, LED tail lights and handy fork preload adjusters.

Suzuki SV650 (2005-2008)

Suzuki SV650/S (2005-2008) - OUR PICK!
The big change for 2005 was the cool-looking black frame and swingarm on both naked and half-faired models. Little has changed since then, so the 05 model is our 'best used buy' recommendation.

Suzuki SV650 Sport

Suzuki SV650/S (2006-current)
The SV650 Sport is basically an SV650S with lower fairings and a seat cowl and it's the only SV in the 2009 Suzuki range.

Suzuki Gladius

Suzuki SFV650 Gladius (2009-current)
For 2009 the SV650 has been replaced by the nicely-finished Suzuki Gladius. Besides the radically changed looks, the Gladius also boasts more midrange and a beautifully smooth fuel-injection system that's very similar to that found on the GSX-R range.
