DUCATI has launched an upgrade kit to give Monster S4 owners a hefty boost of power. In fact the kit is so good it gives the Monster the same power as a stock 998!
The Ducati Monster S4 SPS kit is an official Ducati accessory and consists of new camshafts, a full exhaust system with either carbon or titanium cans – high or low level – a new free flowing air-filter and a new ECU to adjust the fuel injection system.
According to Ducati figures once it has been fitted the power of the S4 goes up by 14bhp to 122bhp from 108bhp. Torque is also given a healthy boost from 70ft lb to 76ft lb.
Although the Monster S4 uses basically the same engine as the 916, Ducati altered its timing to give the S4 more torque low-down. As the Monster doesn’t have the wind protection of the faired superbike, riders tend not to ride at such higher speeds or rev the motor as high, so the power is concentrated lower down.
The easiest way to do this is to alter the cam-shaft profile. This adjusts the amount of time the valves in the head spend open. The longer the valves are shut while the gasses are burning in the cylinder, the more torque is created, but at the sacrifice of top end power which requires the valves to open and shut faster.
" Ducati did something similar with the valves on the old Monster 900, " said Jeff Green, workshop manager of Ducati experts JHP Performance. " The 1997 Monster had smaller valves for more torque, which pulled like a train low down. But some riders wanted to rev the motor, so Ducati released the ‘S’ version with bigger valves which was a far revvier motor, at the sacrifice of low-down torque. "
The Monster SPS kit costs £1645 with low-level cans and £1762 for high-level, fitting should set you back around £200. If you get it done at an authorised Ducati Performance dealer your warranty isn’t affected. The pipes aren’t road legal.
