BMW grounds K1200S

BMW has suspended all test rides of its K1200S and is delaying delivery of bikes to customers until beyond the end of the year.

It says the reason is a “defective camshaft component” supplied by a third party.

“It was identified during BMW’s standard inspection programme, where it was discovered that this part had been manufactured to a lower standard than BMW specification,” says the firm.

“The camshafts have exhibited some deviation in the hardness of the surface layer that can lead to excessive wear.”

The firm insists the quality of this part is in no way related to the design of the K1200S engine.

Riders who have tried the new bike have generally been positive about it, but there have been complaints about glitches in the fuel injection.
