MILAN SHOW: Moto Guzzi get the scrambler bug

Moto Guzzi are as anxious as the other manufacturers to quickly grab a slice of the nostalgic new breed of sales of ‘scrambler’ style bikes, and this new V7 II Stornello is their take on the theme – and we think it looks great.

Based around the updated V7 engine and chassis platform the Stornello is following the traditional path set down by the scrambler machines of the 1960s and 70s with higher handlebars, long flat seat, knobbly tyres and a high-level exhaust.

Moto Guzzi were known for the Eagle Brand bike introduced in the 1960s and the company has brought that traditional style right up to date with the latest 744cc V-twin engine from the updated V7 engine and chassis but using the old Stornello name used between 1960 and ’74.

The Arrow exhaust has been designed to mimic those of the 1960s as closely as possible and runs down the right side of the engine for extra ground clearance. The longer, flatter seat suits the style of a scrambler and is matched by the dual-purpose knobbly tyres.

Just like the old bikes, some of the parts have been changed from steel to aluminium. Unlike the competition bikes of the ‘60s, this new bike changes parts in order to look the part. Mudguards, footpegs and injector bodies are all made of aluminium alloy.

The Stornello gets a unique paintscheme that features a red frame and white fuel tank along with a set of three numberboards. It gets ABS and traction control as standard fit, along with the rest of the V7 II range, while the whole package weighs in at a claimed 186kg.
