BMW reveal new R1300RS with more power and tech plus as much touring potential as ever before

BMW have given their resident sports tourer a bump in displacement for 2025, creating the R1300RS – a bike they claim is the most dynamic RS model yet, while being easier to ride and just as capable at munching miles as its predecessors.

The new machine boasts the Bavarian firm’s most powerful boxer twin to date, plus an all-new chassis, a raft of rider aids, a sharper new look, and tweaked ergonomics to sit the rider in a more forward-leaning position – although speccing the ‘comfort handlebars’ takes things back to a more relaxed stance.

Power comes courtesy of BMW’s 1300cc air/liquid-cooled motor as found in the uber-popular R1300GS and GSA adventure bike models, plus the new R1300R naked, and new R1300RT.

Here, it churns out 143bhp at 7750rpm and 110lb.ft at 6500rpm – up nine horses and 4.5lb.ft on the outgoing R1250RS – with drive delivered through a six-speed gearbox now mounted below the engine to help centralise mass.

BMW say weight has been concentrated closer to the centre of gravity for improved handling, with a more compact sheet-steel main frame replacing the old tubular design.

A new aluminium subframe, lighter wheels, and a revised Evo Paralever rear damper also help sharpen the RS, although despite the efforts, kerb weight sits a shade heavier than its predecessor at 245kg.

Suspension up front comes courtesy of 47mm forks with electronic adjustability as standard. Opting for the Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) system unlocks load compensation and – for only the second time on a telescopic unit – electronically adjustable spring rates.

Three riding modes come as standard (Rain, Road, Eco), with the Pro package adding Dynamic and Dynamic Pro, plus ride mode pre-selection and customisable traction control. Optional Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) allows fully clutchless gear changes with no lever at all (as seen on the 1300GS Adventure ASA).

Radar-assisted safety tech is also available via BMW’s Riding Assistant pack, including Active Cruise Control, Front Collision Warning, Lane Change Warning and Rear End Collision Warning.

Lighting is handled by an LED twin-chamber headlamp, with adaptive cornering lights via optional Headlight Pro.

As expected, the RS packs touring potential, with heated seats and a luggage set-up (with electric central locking) offering a cavernous 104 litres of stowage space.

Four versions will be available: standard Racing Blue, Triple Black, Performance, and the premium Option 719 Cuyamaca.
