MCN's top 5 winter boots

MCN staff have sploshed through enough puddles, ridden through plenty of lorry spray and slogged the length of the country (and beyond) in driving rain, to make sure we thoroughly test the kit we’re wearing.

The five pairs of all-weather boots we’ve shown here have all been given the highest ratings, so if you’re buying these from the MCN Shop we’re confident you’re making the right decision.

Alpinestars Web Gore-Tex
MCN says: “Riding 80 miles a day to work through winter, I find boots are probably the single most important piece of kit. Many look the part but just aren’t warm enough when it comes to the crunch. Even the tiniest water leak is a disaster. These, I can happily report, have proved absolutely 100% waterproof and have a very effective thermal lining. I’ve worn them on long rides through snow and my feet have felt snug and warm throughout. They do-up on the inside leg, which make them easier to put on. For Gore-Tex boots with the Alpinestars name on them, they’re very well priced.”

Daytona Roadstar GTX
MCN says: “For me, these boots have become the benchmark for touring footwear. Not only do they provide wide-footed me with the perfect fit, but I’ve also found these boots to be the ultimate in everyday on- and off-bike wear. I’ve used them during six summers and through the worst of six winters and they’ve only now started to leak slightly. I’m hoping to send them back to the supplier and see if anything can be done to salvaged them. I’ll keep you posted. They’re almost perfect in every way, and I even wear them when I’m not riding. Sad but true.”

Sidi Vertigo Gore-Tex
MCN says: “They’re warm and they’ve so far been 100% waterproof (and let’s face it, the weather doesn’t get much worse than it has been in recent months).
I like my all-weather boots to come with at least a smattering of sports style, so they tick that box, too. The closure system is reassuringly solid, and the clever Sidi disc closure system at the rear works nicely, too, allowing you to tailor the fit once you’re safely in.”

Oxford Sport Bone Dry
MCN says: “They are snug and well articulated so they are probably the most comfortable shoes I own, let alone motorcycle boots. You can wear them all day without even noticing. I have crashed in them; apart from a bit of scuffing they were undamaged. My feet were fine too. They might be called sports boots but with the right socks they are solid commuter wear for almost all seasons. They will keep your feet dry too.”

Frank Thomas Classic

MCN says: “Unlike so many pairs of boots I’ve had in the past, these were an instantly comfortable fit from the first day I slipped them over my feet. I really like the classic style of them, too – they feel really good and secure on the bike riding over to the Ace Cafe and they don’t look out of place in the car park among the countless pairs of classic biker boots. What they have over a true ’60s-style boot is hard armour in the shin – a huge bonus."
