Rukka Next to Skin base layer top and long johns, £99.99 each
Tester: Michael Guy
Time tested: Five years/24,000 miles
What’s good? Rukka say this base layer is designed to be used on its own or as a mid-layer over the top of warming thermal underwear. I do the latter and use these over the top of my M&S thermals, but only when the temperature plummets. Its wind-blocking properties make it a key part of my winter kit and helps make my hour-long motorway commute bearable. After five years of use and multiple washes both top and bottoms have retained their shape well and remain as good as new.
What’s not? While I’m a firm believer of you get what you pay for, the £200 price tag for underwear is hard to fathom. Yes they are good and will clearly last a long time, but they are exuberantly expensive in anyone’s book.
