Akrapovic Racing Line Carbon exhaust, £639

What’s good? I’m not even going to pretend this is a sensible purchase for the Yamaha MT-07 I bought last autumn, but it gives me immense satisfaction and is thereby worth the cash. For all of the fantastic qualities the parallel-twin MT has, aural delight isn’t one of them. This Racing Line exhaust peps it up no end but with the removable decibel killer in place it still maintains sociability with the neighbours. Power is up by 2.6bhp, the power curve is noticeably better between 5000 and 6000rpm and it weighs 3kg less than the standard one. It looks way better and the quality is as good as you expect from Akrapovic. The stainless headers resisted a winter salt attack without a mark.

What’s not? There’s no getting away from the high cost. This system junks the catalyst so strictly speaking it won’t pass an MOT - but there is a road legal option from Akrapovic as an alternative. It’s hard to clean the back of the silencer because of its proximity to the swingarm.
