Product Review: Held Cold Champ gloves

Held Cold Champ gloves, £154.99

Time tested: Five months / 3500 miles

What’s good? The Cold Champ is an exceptionally well-made leather and Gore-Tex winter glove from purveyors of fine and subtle bike kit, Held. The goatskin palm is so soft that you struggle to believe how strong it is, and the lining is equally duvet-like in its plush comfort. There’s nothing clever about the name either, this truly is a cold-weather only glove. Wear them at ambient temperatures of 8-degrees plus and your hands will be gently roasting, but when the thermometer is suggesting something close to zero, they’ll keep your pinkies happy and functioning for hours.
Adding precipitation into the mix has no impact as they are genuinely waterproof; I’ve ridden for five hours in heavy rain and suffered no water ingress. They stay secure on your hands, too. The wrist closure and cuff are highly effective, and the length of the cuff is perfect for a good overlap with your jacket’s sleeves, while the hard protection and padding is adequate.

What’s not? The price is a little hard to swallow. You are getting a superbly spec’d and quality product – and my last pair lasted 30,000 miles – but it’s still a lot of money for the average rider, and a winter-only glove. I think you could lose a little padding from the palm without compromising the thermal properties, too.
