Review: Arai Astro R

Arai Astro R, £330

Tester: Rupert Paul

Miles covered/time: 20,000/2 years

What’s good? It’s an Arai. I’ve had them since 1987 and I can’t stop now. They are nice to wear; exceedingly beautiful to look at, own and clean; and they work.

Irritatingly, Arai jiggled about with their headforms a few years ago, so the Astro R didn’t correspond to the earlier Astro J. Instead, the direct replacement (ie guaranteed to fit if you had an Astro J) turned out to be a Viper.

A new crown piece, and some fitting by a race technician got this R to fit me perfectly anyway.

What’s not? You get the odd bit of misting sometimes. The ‘just open’ setting almost always sorts it. And all helmets by their nature are still far too noisy. So I wear earplugs.
