Jacket review: Belstaff Trialmaster

Belstaff Trialmaster jacket £379.99
Miles covered/time:
3000 miles/four months

What’s good? Modern motorcycle clothing and clothing for the ‘normal’ world don’t often mix well, especially when it comes to waterproofs.

Despite Italy’s best efforts, wear a waterproof bike jacket down the pub and people will point.

That’s not surprising when the majority look as if they belong to an eastern European lettuce picker.

Very few jackets can cut it at Bike meet and Bistro but the Belstaff Trialmaster can. The classic four pocket, belted waist, tartan lined, three quarter length jacket is understated style with just a whiff of adventure.

A 70 year old British design (alas now made in Italy), the Trialmaster still works surprisingly well as a modern bike jacket too: wax cotton breathes better than most hi-tech membranes, is 100% waterproof and arguably as protective as modern alternative materials.

Unsurprisingly Steve McQueen was a big fan.

The Trialmaster now comes with shoulder and elbow CE approved armour and a detachable quilted lining but quite rightly remains true to the style of the original icon.

What’s not? Unfortunately adventure isn’t the only whiff you get if the pub has the heating turned up. The wax coating can get a little pungent at times
