Dainese Santa Monica jacket, £479.99
Time owned: Three years
What’s good? Solid, classy, quality throughout. The leather is reassuringly thick, the construction durable and it features everything you need in the right place without being overly fussy or gimmicky.
Thermal liner is good, too, making this usable through much more of the year than your average thin, perforated, summer-only jobbie.
All the other expected features are present and correct: one inner, two outer pockets, zip to pants, waist and neck adjustable.
Cool bonuses are titanium shoulder protectors and back speed hump.
What’s not? Plain red may not be to everyone’s taste (but it works well in MCN pictures), which is probably why it’s now dropped (instead, plain white, maroon, black or silver are current options).
Speed hump is awkward under waterproofs and Dainese lettering highlights reflect, a bit naffly, at night – though I can see the use. It’s not cheap, either.
But it’s also more solid, durable and truly, classily timeless than any other jacket I’ve had for years.
