Product review: Helly Hansen Merino twin pack

Helly Hansen Merino twin pack, £60
Miles covered/time:
2100/nine months

What's good? There's loads of base-layer thermals around but I've never worn any as comfortable or as warm as these.

They use the best knowledge taken from the outdoor world which makes them perfect for riding. Long sleeves, and a wicking quick-drying fabric means they're my new staple riding kit. And the best thing is there's £30 off the top and bottoms at the moment.

Since the moment I put them on they've barely left my skin, including some New Year trail riding where they were comfortable when riding and kept me warm as we stopped and drank tea.

On the ride to work they're my new best friend and I can keep them on all day without getting sweaty in the office.

I got the Helly Hansen kit from Cotswold Outdoor, the people who advise world record motorcycle travellers Simon and Julia Sanders and Dakar god Simon Pavey, along with a host of adventurers.

What's not? Although merino wool dries twice as fast as other fabrics, that doesn't help you much when you're immersed in a small river over the Christmas break, shivering.
