Product review: Hein Gericke overtrousers

Hein Gericke overtrousers (superseded by Basic II Rain Pants £25.99)
Miles covered/time:
2000/seven years

What’s good? These trousers lurk at the bottom of my rucksack, year in, year out, ready to be called into action once the heavens open.

About seven years down the line they are still just as waterproof as they were the day I got them.

Zips on the lower legs allow you to (just about) put them on without removing your boots and elasticated hems ensure a good seal around your boot.

They don’t flap around too much at speed either.

What’s not? Being old-style waterproofs they aren’t breathable, so conditions can turn tropical if the weather improves or you have to go inside out of the rain – I really suffered when I got stuck in a queue at Morrisons.

Occasionally the zips snag on the lining, but this is a fairly rare occurrence.

These particular trousers have been discontinued but Hein Gericke’s Basic II kit looks to have a similar spec.

Rating: 4/5
