Kit review: EDZ All Season Base Layer
EDZ All Season Base Layer, £20
Miles covered/time: 2300 miles/two months
What’s good? It’s an extremely soft and lightweight piece of clothing that negates the friction you naturally feel under heavy biking gear. In fact, it’s so comfortable I often wear it underneath my everyday clobber, not just my leathers! It retains a lot of warmth, despite being so thin, and wicks away moisture when you heat up, keeping you comfy and dry whatever the conditions. I’ve found it a bit like wearing earplugs: once you’ve tried it you won’t go back.
What’s not? It’s not made from merino wool, which dries quicker, retains fewer odours and is possibly even softer to the touch. On the plus side it’s half the price of EDZ’s merino alternative (£20 as opposed to £40), so this makes sense for anyone looking for a basic, budget underlayer. I wouldn’t recommend using this short-sleeved version for wearing beneath leathers; as it doesn’t reach to your wrists it’ll feel slightly uncomfortable. Plump for the long-sleeved version – it only costs a fiver extra.
