Lewis jacket, £99.99
Miles covered/time: 40,000 miles /12 years
What’s good: Simple classic looks that don’t look out of place in the pub, and robust construction that has withstood a couple of low speed slides.
It was good value too – the 1999 price escapes me, but I remember this Lewis jacket was about the same as a midrange Frank Thomas, which would put it at about £120. You can get them now from George White for £99.99, though I could only find them in dog-poo brown.
Don’t confuse it with jackets from Lewis Leathers, which are very high quality British made jobs (a nicely run-in 1977 one’s on sale on eBay today for £1200!)
What’s not: The fit is not quite perfect for me – I have been meaning to get it adjusted for over a decade and will perhaps get round to it before I retire – and the armour is low rent.
