Men’s Barbour Rexton waxed jacket, £429.95
Miles covered/time: 1500/two months
What’s good: This jacket is a recreation of the one worn by Steve McQueen in the 1964 East German ISDT, based around the Barbour International A7. It comes with a distinctive stars and stripes cotton lining and American flag on the chest. Made from heavyweight 8oz waxed cotton it’s great for summer riding as it is a very breathable jacket, but as autumn comes you need a layer under it to keep the cold out. The motorcycle jacket has been distressed making it look like it’s been around for a few years with that nicely worn in look (as opposed to worn out). There are the distinctive brass popper fasteners on the pockets and cuffs, with a buckled strap to secure the corduroy lined collar, perfect for stopping the wind blowing down your neck, and a waist belt to stop it blowing up your back. Not only good for motorcycling, but just the job for a jaunt down to the local pub on a wet night
What’s not: It’s not so much a bad point, it is the fact it does not have any armour, it is a traditional jacket, made in a traditional manner, but if you were worried about this, there is no reason why you shouldn’t wear some body armour underneath. The price is a bit heavy, but when you see the jacket in the flesh, it’s worth the extra.
