Dainese Thorax Wave Pro Chest and Back Protector, £199
Miles covered/time: 600 miles/one week
What’s good: Firstly, it’s light and comfortable. I wore this Dainese body armour for 10 hours a day during a recent touring trip in Italy where temperatures seldom dropped below 30°C and was deeply impressed I didn’t die of heat exhaustion.
The numerous holes, channels and raised areas allow airflow under the protector and stop that hideous clammy feel you normally get. Also, because it’s designed to work as a unit, it’s quick and easy to get on and off – much quicker than separate back and chest protectors.
These are important benefits because I don’t need much of an excuse to leave back protectors behind. I didn’t fall off or get punched in the chest during my trip, so am unable to verify its impact absorbing properties.
What’s not: £200 seems like a lot of money to me, even for a top-end protector. The chest protector in particular is thick, and combined with the back protector could cause fit problems if your leathers are snug.
