Oxford Rider Grips, £26.99
Miles covered/time: 200/two months
What's good: My wife absolutely swears by this method of pillion carriage. For the rider's part, you put this wide belt around your waist and secure it with a satisfyingly large plastic buckle; the passenger then hops on the bike and is kept secure and comfortable by holding on to the two rubberized handles either side of your ribs. It works for us because it puts Mrs A in a natural riding position, rather than reaching behind or to the side to hold on for her life to grabrails (which are often too uncomfortable for her hands to grasp safely). The belt fits 36-50in - that's taking into account that fact you wear it over your jacket.
What's not: Compared to other varieties of pillion grips that I've used in the past, these are a tad bulky. While this is reassuring in some ways, in others it can make the product occasionally restrictive in use. The tighter your jacket, the more comfy the grips for the rider, in my experience.
