Product Review: Laser crankcase separator
Laser crankcase separator £45

Time tested: 12 months
What’s good? Back when my race bike had bog-standard cast crankcases I wasn’t averse to giving them an bit of encouragement with a mallet in order to split them when it was time for a bottom-end refresh. But now my RS125 has beautiful billet cases the hammer needs to stay in the drawer and a specialist tool take its place. Trouble is, HRC want £120 for the specialist tool, which is essentially just a set of mounting bolts and a big screw. Thankfully, Machine Mart stock this Laser one, which is just a fraction of the price and features both 6mm and 8mm bolts to suit a variety of bikes. It even comes in a handy plastic storage case.
What’s not? It’s still a fair chunk of money to lay out on what is essentially a very simple tool, but if you’re rebuilding engines regularly it’s essential.
