Sell a bike for what you paid for it

Save yourself money by buying a depreciation free bike

When bike prices go up – and they will next year – depreciation of older bikes changes. All of a sudden it’s not: “Well, it’s five years old so it’s lost half its value,” but: “Well, look at the price of a new one. OK, so the new model has a few more gizmos and a new paintscheme, but it’s 15 grand!” And that makes your older model worth more.

I’ve just been through this with a mate who was after the latest BMW R1200GS. That’ll be the interim 2016/17 model launched in August this year to bridge the gap between the non-Euro4-compliant 2016 model and the new-for-2017 version arriving in April. Confusing, eh? The interim GS gets gearbox revisions, a new dashboard, new paint, new crashbars and a few other fol-de-rols. Plus (of course) it’s Euro4-compliant. A dealer had an ex-demo 2016 model in stock, negligible mileage, and five grand cheaper, partly because it wasn’t spanking new and partly because it was the old model. My mate bought it.

The same applies to used bikes. A new base model 1200GS is £13,285. Add £1370 for the Premium Package (electronic suspension, onboard computer, etc). Add £520 for the Comfort package, and £800-odd for decent luggage. Cruise control? £395. LED headlight? £700!

You can spec a GS up to £18,000 without blinking. Right now, a used 2014 GS is worth £10k-£12k, depending on spec and mileage. In a year it’ll hardly have depreciated, and it’s basically the same bike.

Neil says: I bought this one myself. All original, even the exhausts, and in good condition.

1990 Harley-Davidson 1200 Sportster £2455

Seller says: 19,000 miles, new C&S, drag pipes, long MoT, few scabby bits.
