Buying pre-registered and ex-demo bikes is a good idea. I’m looking at an ad for a pre-reg Honda CBR500, at £800 off list.
What’s the catch with things like this? None, really. Sometimes a dealer pre-registers a bike simply to hit a sales target, which will net him a bonus or a rebate. You, the buyer, get what is technically a used bike with zero miles, one extra owner listed on the V5 and maybe a month or two off the warranty.
Essentially, you’re losing the initial depreciation. In two or three years, the bike won’t really be worth any less than a one-owner machine. Remember, also, that you won’t be paying any PDI or delivery charges as those have already been accounted for.
Ex-demo bikes are slightly trickier, because they have been ridden, and may have a few hundred miles on the clock. But the same rules apply: if the discount is big enough, it’s a sound way to buy. I bought my Yamaha Tenéré this way, four years ago, for a saving of over a grand. It’s worth exactly the same as any other 2009 model Tenéré now.
I had a snoop and these are the bargains I found, all on pre-reg bikes with zero or delivery mileage: Ducati Monster 1200, £9450; Honda 1000 Varadero, £7995; Suzuki Bandit 1250S, £7999; Yamaha YBR125, £2250 (that’s a steal); 2014 Yamaha XJ,6 £4799; Ducati Scrambler Sixty2, £5995; and finally, a 2015 Kawasaki Ninja 250, £2975 (that’s cheaper than many 125s). Put ‘pre-reg’ into your searches. It makes sense.
