Bike of the day: BMW R nineT

Published: 05 April 2018

Why it’s MCN’s pick:

It’s amazing to think that the BMW R nineT is four years old this year as it seems just yesterday that this air-cooled boxer arrived and redefined the retro naked class.

Launched in 2014, to be brutally honest nobody expected the BMW to be very good. Sure, it looked cool, but retros were generally wobbly handling and a bit lethargic. How wrong we were…

Powered along by that thumping air-cooled boxer engine and its accompanying spirit and raw feeling, the R nineT combined this brutal performance with a chassis that boasted inverted forks and top-rate suspension. And, most pleasingly of all, it lacked any electronic assists aside from the mandatory ABS. No traction control, no power modes and heated grips were an option. BMW had returned retro biking to its roots and the R nineT was, deservedly, a massive hit.
