Why it’s MCN’s pick:
This is quite an interesting bike as the Rossi Rep is an official Yamaha model, as well as a limited edition bike, but it generally fails to command much of a premium despite its exclusivity.
Launched in 2005, only 2500 YZF-R46 ‘Rossi Reps’ were released to celebrate Rossi’s first MotoGP title with Yamaha. Basically a stock R6, the Rep added a (fairly hideous) sun and moon paint scheme that was based around Rossi’s lid as well as a Termignoni pipe and numbered plaque on the top yoke. Oh, and a Rossi signature sticker…
The thing about the Rossi Rep is that it never sold that well (this one was registered in 2007, not 2005, hinting at it standing around in a dealership), mainly due to the paint. If it had been a Gauloises Rep like the MotoGP team it would probably have done much better, but by the mid-2000s the appeal of cigarette sponsorship was starting to dip.
The really great thing about the R46 is that underneath the paint is one of best models of older R6 there was with fuel-injection, a ‘proper-size’ front tyre and even radial brakes. So, to be honest, if you don’t like the R46, just buy a 2005 R6 as they are fantastic bikes.
