Why it’s MCN’s pick:
With MCN currently riding the Scrambler 1100, what better time to look back at the last time Ducati (unsuccessfully it has to be said) attempted an air-cooled large-capacity retro range?
Launched in 2002 with the Mike Hailwood replica MH900e, Ducati chose the Tokyo Motorshow to unveil their new concept under the ‘SportClassic’ banner.
Powered by an air-cooled 992cc motor and designed by Pierre Terblanche (he of 999 fame), the SportClassic range went on to consist of the limited edition Paul Smart rep, Sport 1000, GT1000 and Sport 1000S, but ultimately were only produced until 2010 as the market failed to appreciate them for what they were.
Ironically, just as production stopped, the current retro bubble started to inflate and after hitting rock-bottom, SportClassic prices have subsequently gone through the roof! Nothing demonstrates this trend better than this Sport 1000, which at £10,250 is only £445 less than a brand new Scrambler 1100!
“Selling this bike as I have too many to care for and ride. This is a rare Black Ducati Sport Classic (as used in the movie Tron) as anyone looking for one would know. It has done around 3800 miles. It’s had new timing belts in the last year and a new set of tyres that have done one trip from Cambridge to the Isle of Man and back last year. The bike has Termignoni exhausts. It’s used so there are signs of wear. There is a small chip on the passenger seat cowl and a chip on the bottom of the fuel tank. The bike has surface rust on the spokes, which is common on these bikes. I was going to replace with stainless spokes but too many other bikes to care for. This motorcycle is in good condition and always garaged.”
