There’s a time and a place for proper spotsbikes and it’s not while you’ve got an A2 licence. The Honda CBR500R proves that you can build a fun bike without exceeding the 47bhp threshold.

At town speeds or at low revs, the CBR500R is a docile and mild-mannered bike. It’s smooth and easy to ride and there’s enough grunt low down to zip between traffic thanks to the 180-degree crank and balance shaft.

The surprise comes as the revs mount, the engine just keeps giving and giving all the way up to the 8,500 rpm redline. If you rev it hard enough it becomes a halfway credible sportsbike.

Most people keep them for two years and then shop them in for something bigger, so it’s not hard to find a low-mileage used model like this one.

What the seller says
