The Yamaha R1 was first released in 1998 and was an instant hit. In a world of lardy Honda FireBlades, Kawasaki ZX-9Rs, and thumpy V-Twins like the Suzuki TL1000, this 998cc, 150bhp, 20-valve missile turned the sportsbike world on its head, leaving the competition far behind in a flash of red and white haze.
Fast forward 20 years and the Yamaha R1 remains the flagship superbike in the Japanese firm’s stable, now producing around 200bhp and available in both a standard and more track-focused R1M guise.
The R1 has appeared in multiple shapes throughout its life, meaning there are now plenty of bargains to be had on the used market from as little as £2500.
As well as varying in style and power output, each model enjoys a differing degree of technology and engine configuration - with early models adopting the conventional inline-four and later bikes from 2009-onwards gaining a MotoGP-inspired cross-plane crank four cylinder lump.
The 2003 model described below was born into a golden age of 1000cc four-pot-engined superbikes, including the Suzuki GSX-R1000 and aforementioned FireBlade. The bonkers Kawasaki ZX-10R appeared just a year later.
