ACU unveil bigger and better racing Academy

The ACU Academy has offered training for young road racers for the last two years. Now it will also offer motocross, trials, grasstrack and enduro training.

In addition to the eight new road racers selected for 2003, there will also be eight Motocross, eight Trials and Enduro, and two Grass Track riders training with the Academy.

The ACU is celebrating it’s 100th year in 2003, and the full list of Academy riders will be revealed at the Autosport show at the NEC on January 9th. However, we can reveal the list of road racers.

The eight riders are : Alex Lower, aged 12 from Lincoln, racing in MRO Superteens. Sam Lowes, aged 12 from Lincoln, joining his twin brother in MRO Superteens. Jay Bellers-Smith, aged 16 from South Wales, racing in the New Era Super club series. Peter Hickman, aged 15 from Lincolnshire, racing in Superteens. James Webb, aged 13, from Kent, competing in the British National 125cc series, Keiran Clarke, aged 17 from Nottingham, who will be in Junior Superstock. Rob Guiver, aged 17 from Essex, in the 125GP National Championship, and finally Kev Coglan, aged 15 from Scotland, again in Superteens.

They’ll all get three years of training, including track tuition, fitness training, and even how to deal with the media. Previous pupils include 250cc GP racer Chaz Davies, Craig Jones, National Junior Superstock champ, Jon Kirkham, the youngest ever BSB racer, and Midge Smart, Red Bull Rookies 125GP racer.
