Star-studded AMA Supermoto begins this weekend

1 of 1

The first round of the AMA Supermoto championship kicks off at Laguna Seca in California this weekend to coincide with World Superbike races visiting the circuit. And the entry list for the supermoto racing is just as prestigious.

The list is headed by 1993 500cc world road race champion Kevin Schwantz on a Yoshimura Suzuki DRZ400. He’s already been racing in local and national supermoto events, and is still recovering from a broken hand, but he’s determined to make the start line.

Other road racing names include ex-500GP man Doug Chandler and Thomas Stevens both of whom are former U.S. Superbike champions. The 1990 Daytona 200 winner, Dave Sadowski is also racing.

From the dirt come supercross legend Jeremy McGrath, Travis Pastrana and freestyler Mike Metzger. McGrath is racing a Honda CRF450 as part of the Troy Lee Designs team, which includes former Indy Racing League car driver Jeff Ward and Troy Lee himself. Defending U.S. dirt track champion Chris Carr is also racing as is former champion Joe Kopp.
