WCM will race at Donington

The WCM team will race at this weekend’s British GP, albeit on 500cc two-stroke Yamahas.

Brit Chris Burns and Spaniard David de Gea will ride the bikes, one of which took Niall Mackenzie to third place in the 1993 British Grand Prix at Donington. WCM did run Yamaha two-strokes last year, in the Red Bull-sponsored team with riders Garry McCoy and John Hopkins, but these bikes are of a slightly different vintage.

Burns admits he has never ridden a two-stroke 500cc bike before. The closest he has come is a 125cc bike, but he still hopes to qualify for the race after a practice day at Rockingham this week.

The team plan to use the same bikes for the German MotoGP round a fortnight later before finally running their own four-stroke machines.
