Two wins for Everts at MXGP

Stefan Everts won both the 125cc and 450cc races at the fourth round of the Motocross GP world championship at the weekend, in Montevarchi, Italy.

The factory Yamaha rider led the entire 450cc race without being challenged to take his first Motocross GP win this season. But it was the battle for second place where all the interesting action took place.

Claudio Federici, who started the race in pole position, was holding second place ahead of World champion Mickael Pichon but he lost control and crashed taking out Pichon in the process. Pichon managed to pick his bike up first but a damaged exhaust saw him slow, letting Federici past again and knocking him off the podium for the first time this year.

While the two riders were down Joel Smets managed to get passed and take second. The KTM rider later fell but his lead over Federici was sufficient to allow him to remount without losing any places.

The 125cc race saw Everts again lead from the start beating Steve Ramon by almost five seconds.

Luigi Seguy was holding second place until he crashed with five minutes to go eventually finishing in sixth. Seguy’s crash let Ramon slip past to take second with World champion Mickael Maschio taking the third podium position.

Joel Smets won the 650cc race, taking his KTM to a convincing 10 second lead over Javier Garcia Vico. The Belgian rider started the race in third position behind Garcia Vico and Cedric Melotte but by lap seven he had passed both riders to take his fourth win in a row.
