Carmichael and Reed take it outside

The opening round of the AMA Nationals motorcross series witnessed Ricky Carmichael and Chad Reed switch their rivalry from indoors arenas to the fresh outdoors.

Carmichael triumphed at the first round at Glen Helen on Sunday, with first place in both Motos. The first came after a crash by early leader Kevin Windham, who had returned from a year-and-a-half sabbatical from racing. Carmichael went on to win by 15.6 seconds from Australian Chad Reed with Tim Ferry in third, both on Yamahas. Windham’s error relegated him to 14th.

Windham also led the early stages of the second race, before he was reeled in by Carmichael. This time Windham survived to take second, with Reed settling for third.

In the 125cc championship, Mike Brown won the first Moto, beating Brock Sellards and Grant Langston. Race two was a battle between Langston and Brown, with Brown eventually settling for second and the overall win. Ryan Hughes reached the final step of the podium with a third.
